UNITED WAY HONORS ALABAMA POWER EMPLOYEE
AT ANNUAL MEETING

The River Region United Way's 2007 Annual Meeting was held last night (4/22) at Jasmine Hill Gardens.  Outgoing United Way President Joe Mathis of Prattville reviewed 2007 for the crowd, noting United Way's leadership in the continuing Katrina disaster relief effort as well as the recent Prattville tornado. He praised 2007 Campaign Chairman Bob Ramsey and his volunteer workers for raising more than six million dollars for the second time in the last four campaigns.

Volunteer leaders for 2007 were honored including Mathis, 2007 Campaign Chairman Bob Ramsey, United Way Budget and Allocations Chair Richard Younger, Toqueville Society of the River Region Chair Todd Strange, and Communications and Marketing Chair Cindy Scott.

The highlight of the Annual Meeting was the awarding of United Way's highest honor, the Adolph "Bucks" Weil Award to Eddie Westbrook, a foreman for the Alabama Power Company.  Westbrook was honored for his years of service as one of United Way's most effective speakers.  His message traces his history as a United Way donor over his 30-plus years with the power company.  The award citation noted his message of plain language, laced with Biblical references and ending up asking if God was watching to see how Eddie (and the rest of us) would respond to people in need.

Prior to the Annual Meeting, guests were treated to a lavish display of food donated by Kings Table Catering, A Social Event, Red's Little Schoolhouse, Boomer T's BBQ, Publix-Zelda Road and Brunos - Bell Road.  Guests feasted on steamed shrimp, chicken baked with rosemary, a grits bar, an entire table of cakes, fried cornbread , trays of vegetables, fruit and cheese, and barbeque pork.
